Charlotte's Choice: Commission

******************************
One of three commissions produced during the museumaker Pas de deux project, in collaboration with Lin Cheung. This piece was made for Charlotte Wood.

******************************
Charlotte’s piece is a response to the complex issues of identity over time, and of public versus private ownership. Cheung and Potter have made two sets of beads, cast from carob seeds, that are ‘equivalent’, but not identical. The difference comes through the material; one being silver and the other being gold. The carob seed is thought to be the origin of the ‘carat’, a measure of purity or mass.

Charlotte will choose which set of beads she prefers at this point, and she will be given that piece as her commission. However, people change, as do their tastes, preferences and circumstances. Cheung and Potter have constructed a scenario where both Charlotte and The Museum are asked to acknowledge the personal changes that might occur, and they propose a system whereby the initial choice may be changed.

Once Charlotte has chosen the gold or silver piece, she will be invited along with The Museum to sign an agreement, which would allow her to exchange her beads for those in The Museum once a year. The contract exhibited here is currently under consideration, and it will be signed if and when each party agrees. The process of negotiating the contract between Charlotte and The Museum will be documented, and this will also become part of the ongoing life of the piece.
