Pas de deux: Commission (museumaker)
Pas de deux was a collaborative project, developed and executed by myself and Lin Cheung between May 2010 and February 2011. The project involved the production of bespoke commissioned works for Middlesbrough residents, with ‘partner’ pieces being produced for mima’s contemporary jewellery collection, and the work was commissioned as part of museumaker: a national partnership between makers, museums and visitors. One of the aims of the project was to utilise the collections and expertise available across three Middlesbrough museums: mima, The Dorman Museum and the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Pas de deux used the museum collections as a means to explore issues around commissioning contemporary craft.
The project was delivered first as a series of workshops, through which a number of ‘project participants’ were selected. We then worked with these individuals on a series of bespoke commissions. Six new works were produced, together with a vast body of process-driven material. The work was shown as part of The Modern Jewel at mima, from March to July 2011.
